Michalakis Christou was born on May 19, 1950, in Lefkara, where he also grew up and learned his craft. He began working with silver at the age of 13, apprenticing under a local master. His training developed gradually through observation and hands-on experience, allowing him to master the techniques of traditional silverwork over time.
For the past 50 years, he has run his own workshop, producing handmade silver items. Over the years, the workshop has become a family-owned business: his two sons learned the craft and now work alongside him, while his wife contributes by creating traditional Lefkara lace in the shop. Now 75 years old, he has dedicated 63 years of his life to this profession.
His work extends beyond Lefkara, attracting customers from various cities such as Paphos, who place orders and contact him directly. He emphasizes the authenticity of his work, noting that all of his products are made entirely of silver.
Reflecting on the past, Christou highlights the multicultural history of Lefkara, recalling that Turkish Cypriots once lived in the village alongside Greek Cypriots. This shared heritage remains an important part of his memory.
A defining feature of his craft is that every piece is entirely handmade. He works with silver sheets that are pressed, shaped, and intricately carved by hand to form each object. The process involves the use of heat and precise manual skill. His son also takes part in production, carving the pieces according to specific measurements and designs.
For Michalakis Christou, silverwork is more than a profession, it is a lifelong dedication that brings together tradition, family, and craftsmanship, preserving a cultural heritage that continues to live through his hands.
